Many people are trained in Basic Life Support techniques, such as CPR, which are designed to sustain life until more advanced help is available. Hospital clinicians are trained in Advanced Life Support (ALS) techniques, which identify and reverse the initial cause of the cardiac arrest.
Since the implementation of processes to better identify the early signs of deterioration, cardiac arrests are becoming less frequent in the inpatient setting. As a result, hospital clinicians are receiving less exposure to managing cardiac arrests but are still required to perform effectively as a team when they do occur.
The ALS-SimVR application is designed to provide team leader training for clinicians managing a patient in a cardiac arrest. The application allows the user to direct a virtual team in all the tasks required of a team managing a patient in a cardiac arrest. Rhythm interpretation, drug doses, pathology results, ABG results are all randomised to create a new experience each time for the user. Key skills required for ALS management are also available as skills trainers within the application including handover practice, defibrillation, cardioversion and pacing and more in development.
The design of the "Learnsuite" collection of trainers allows a clinician to take the VR headset home and complete this immersive training in the location and time of their choosing.
